Hi Cristiano and Mark,
My community is called Waukegan and it is located in the north eastern part of Illinois, U.S. We are about a 20 minute drive from Kenosha, Wisconsin. My home is about a 10 minute drive to Lake Michigan. We used to be a small community when I moved here 14 years ago but it has grown ever since.
We have 14 elementary school, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools.
We do have electricity, although when a big storm with strong winds come, we tend to lose it for a short time. I’m sure that has happened to you before too, no?
There are many nice people in my community. My neighbors are very nice people who help me shovel my snow in the winter and pick up my mail for me when I’m on vacation. The mailman is also a very nice person. She stops to say hello sometimes, when we happen to see each other.
There are many helpers in my community. We have an organization called United Way. Many people from this organization volunteer in my school (I teach 2nd grade) to help students learn to read and to tutor them. They are wonderful.
My community is made up of a large number of Hispanic families. They speak Spanish and English. We have a lot of stores and restaurants that serve Hispanic foods too like tacos, tamales, gorditas, and pupusas. There are also African Americans, Caucasians, and Asians.
Buidlings?? Our neighborhoods are made up of mostly homes but as the community grows, apartment buildings have been build as well. Our small downtown has a community college, a court house, a city hall, and other offices. We have a train station, Metra, that provides transportation to Downtown Chicago and to Kenosha, Wisconsin. We are about 1 hour and 20 minutes from down town Chicago.
We also have lots of parks. There’s a dog park near my house where I take my dog to play after work several days a week. He loves it.
My community is special because it welcomes many different people.
Have a wonderful day.

Dear Cristiano and Mark,
I live in a suburban community that is about 25 miles from Los Angeles. Our community has many buildings, but none of them are very tall. The population of our town is around 24,000 people. We are people who like to stay healthy and fit. In fact, you will often see people jogging or bicycling around town.
We have many community helpers. For one, there is a fire department. The station is about six miles from the elementary school that I work at. I guess you would call me a community helper because I teach third grade! We also have a police department and some traffic guards who help students stay safe when crossing the street. We have electricity in our community, but if the power goes out, we have electric company workers who will fix it.
People are generally nice to one another in my community. There are annual events that bring people together like a Fourth of July Fun Run and a summer art festival. There are also some historical buildings in my community that people enjoy visiting. One is an adobe building that was built along the old stagecoach route!
We do not have any stadiums in our community, but if you drive into Los Angeles you can see a game at the Staple Center. The high school has a nice track and field area where high school football games and other sporting events are held.
What do you like about my community? How is it like yours? How is it different than your community?
Your friend,
Mrs. Y♥llis

We are learning about communities and citizenship right now. We are so glad you asked these questions!
Our community has apartments, houses, hotels, movie theaters, stores restaurants, libraries and even more. There are a lot of buildings in Hoover, Alabama.
We also have schools a big mall. One of the biggest places is Regions Park where our city’s baseball team plays.
There are a lot of people in our community. We are one of the fastest growing cities in our state.
Hoover is important because we have great schools where we share and learn. Hoover High School’s football team is always ranked.
We have community helpers in Hoover. They are police men and women, National Guard, peer helpers from the high school, firefighters, and paramedics.
We do have electricity. Our power company is called Alabama Power. Our teacher’s husband works there and so do some of our parents.
Hoover is almost as big as Birmingham, even though we are a suburb.
We have A LOT of nice people in our community.

Hi Ms. D,
My second graders at Washington Heights Elementary School in Lemoyne, PA were talking about communities today. Here are some things we discussed.
A community is where you play, shop and do jobs, and live.
government
houses
trees and parks
school, offices, playgrounds, police station, post office, fire station, hospital, restaurants,
Buildings:
school
houses
gas stations
grocery stores
hospital
police station
post office
apartments
laundrymat
playgrounds
market
airport
Why is your community important?
Communities help us because they have important buildings like hospitals. Hospitals help us when we’re sick- Kylee
A police station is important because they can help us by getting criminals – Dylan
Ambulances in communities help us because if you’re sick, they will take you to the hospital- Malachi
A gas station helps you get gas for your car. If you don’t have gas, you can’t drive your car. – Logan
A grocery store is important because we need food to live. – Hannah
You need an airport to travel if you want to go on a trip to another country. – Jayce
Who are your community helpers and what do they do?
Cops- they help protect us from bad people- Jayce
Teachers- they help us learn. – Gabe
Doctors and nurses- they figure out what’s the problem with people. – Levi
Parents- they get food and drinks for us and take care of their kids. – Jasmine
We are lucky enough to have electricity in our community. We also have a baseball stadium that the Harrisburg Senators play at. We have a big community because it’s close to the capital of Pennsylvania. We enjoyed talking about the things in our community!
